The Lisbon Reform Treaty

This June, people in Ireland will be given the unique opportunity of voting in favour of the Lisbon Reform Treaty.  This treaty will significantly change the system of governance in the newly enlarged European Union.  It will bring an amicable, fair and balanced system of government to Brussels, and the Labour Party are campaigning strongly for a YES from people of Ireland.

What does the Treaty do?

It introduces wholesale changes to the E.U. in a number of particular areas.

  1. It redefines the European Union as a community of values and common objectives, namely freedom and security for it's citizens and a new objective of full employment throughout the Union.
  2. In introduces a Charter of Fundamental Human Rights that any citizen of any member country can defend at any level of justice.
  3. It increases democracy in the enlarged Union, by taking powers from the Commission and empowering the European Parliament and the National Parliaments of members.
  4. It contains new provisions for tackling global issues that directly effect citizens.  For example, on climate change, the E.U. with Lisbon will strongly promote energy efficiency and renewable energy.
  5. It enables the E.U. to engage in joint humanitarian operations.  All these operations are strictly limited to peace keeping and peace making, and a E.U. wide unanimity will be required to begin them.
