Dominic’s Campaigns

Dominic has been working on a range of issues that affect hard working families in Meath.

Working for Commuters

Dominic has been campaigning for a better service and fairer fares for Meath commuters. He conducted a bus survey in both Ashbourne and Dunshaughlin in 2006, the results of which we presented to Bus Eireann. Dominic is delighted that the Labour Party in Government will introduce a new €1 fare for commuters to Dublin. He has also been highlighting the needs of train users from Laytown and Gormanston, highlighting the need for more regular services, more carriages and more park and ride car spaces.

Health:

Dominic has been concerned at the impact of our two-tiered health service and the crisis in A&E on the health and well being of people in Meath. In January this year, in a leaflet that was distributed to 20,000 homes he set out his visions and proposals to deal with local health issues.  He also asked for feedback from local people on their experiences and suggestions to enhance the health services.

Anti-Social Behaviour:

Anti-Social Behaviour is an issue affecting many communities and neighbourhoods in Meath. Dominic undertook a survey on this issue in June 2006 to gauge the extent of the problem across the county. Dominic received hundreds of responses and the feedback received contributed to the national policy developed by the Labour Party which proposes increasing the numbers of community Gardai on the ground in neighbourhoods and also looking at providing more facilities, in particular for young people in our county.

Unfinished Estates:

Dominic has been actively working with homeowners and residents associations to ensure that work left undone by builders and unfinished estates are sorted out. He has assisted residents associations all over Meath in relation to getting public lights installed, getting roads and green areas finished etc. The Labour Party also introduced legislation that would assist residents and homeowners in dealing with builders who left estates unfinished, unfortunately this Government voted this proposed law down.

Broadband:

This Government has failed miserably to ensure that individual households and communities have access to Internet broadband services. The lack of broadband is a major deficiency that inhibits education, working from home and business. Instead of waiting on the Government to act, Dominic has taken the case directly to the Eircom. In partnership with local communities such as those in Stamullen he has been working to convince Eircom of the need to provide broadband in Meath. In December Dominic collected 188 signatures from households in Stamullen that were presented to the Chairman of Eircom. In response to this petition, Eircom has indicated that they will provide broadband in Stamullen in the coming months.

Road Safety for School Children:

Dominic has been campaigning for a number of months to improve the safety outside of all the schools in Meath. Dominic has proposed that every school in Meath should have flashing yellow lights to advise drivers to drive with care during school opening and closing times. Dominic believes that the Government or Meath County Council should be penny pinching when the lives of children are at stake. Hundreds of parents have supported his campaign by signing a form to be sent to the County Manager. In this years Budget more funding was provided to install yellow flashing lights outside more schools, however much more needs to be done.
